This landscape of castle ruins was a sample etching done on a scrap of countertop granite.
The reference photo for the etching required no sketch or mock-up drawing even though I had to make a few changes.
This shows a 25% scale rough sketch for an idea that was being developed. The customer had a few criteria - a western mountainscape, an elk, a deer, a turkey, and fishing from a boat. The finished size would be 17x36 so the sketch was made at 9.5x4.5”. At this point, a quote was given with the sketch and was found to be beyond their budget, otherwise the next step would have been to take a deposit
Several hours were spent looking for legal photo references of the elements the customer requested. Care was also taken to choose subject animals with the correct lighting direction and species of animals that would be found in the western US mountains.
